Friends
of the Farm squeezed in one last community event before Christmas (2016), a two
hour workshop at Ambury Farm making beeswax wraps. These easy to make wraps are an environmentally-friendly
alternative to using cling film to wrap or cover food. It’s great to have a stash of these in the
kitchen to help your household reduce waste, and they also make excellent
presents.
We put
the word out on Facebook and the RSVPs quickly started coming in. On the night, 13 locals (plus 2 cheeky
goats!) joined us to make their own set of 4 wraps. Our experienced environmental educators
Meredith and Caroline led us through the 3 easy steps- cutting the fabric,
grating beeswax and ironing it into the wraps.
Participants brought their own fabric and Friends of the Farm supplied
graters, beeswax, baking paper and irons.
There
was some trouble shooting to be done along the way, and we quickly learned that
some fabrics are more suitable than others- 100% cotton, colour-fast fabric definitely
works best! Apart from the odd problem, the
process went smoothly for most of us and some beautiful wraps were created.
All in
all, it was a lovely evening, a nice way to catch up with other Mangere Bridge
locals and to create a product that will help us all reduce waste in our homes
and foster a wastewise community. Thanks
